The anatomy of Margarita with recipes

Best tequila for margarita

Since its inception, simplicity has been at the core of the Margarita. Among classic drinks, Margarita ticks all the boxes when it comes to the Big Four: sour, sweet, salty and bitter. To achieve it, the lime provides the sour, tequila some bitter but also sweet along with triple sec or agave syrup, and of course the traditional salty rim. It’s just not the same without it, and for a reason. It’s all about balanced flavors and quality of ingredients.

To start with, always choose a quality tequila that will boost the rest of the flavors. Not to be show offs, but Altos Tequila has just been recognized as the best tequila for margaritas by bartenders, according to the prestigious Drinks International; so that goes for quality. Of course, fresh, green limes (or your favorite kind, whatever produces the right kind of sour for you) and you can change the traditional sugars of triple sec for a less caloric, less processed sweetener like agave syrup (or if you have a good quality honey at home, give it a try). When replacing ingredients expect to change quantities a bit, but experiment; there are no mistakes.

So if you want to make the classic recipe, you can follow this:

The Classic Margarita

Ingredients:

  • Altos Plata Tequila 2 parts
  • Triple sec 1 part
  • Fresh lime juice 1 part

Directions:

Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice, and then serve in any type of tumbler glass frosted with salt. If you don’t have a shaker, any jar with a lid that doesn’t open easily will work.

In case you wanna do a bigger batch for all your friends, follow this one:

The Classic Margarita Punch

The Classic Margarita Punch

Ingredients:

  • Altos Plata Tequila 600ml
  • Triple sec 300ml
  • Lime juice 300ml

Directions:

Put all ingredients together and ice blend! It should be good for 1 liter.

Here at Altos we try to make things as crafted as possible, pursuing flavor in the way we cook agave, ferment and even distill. That is why we follow Julio Bermejo's tweak to the margarita recipe, adding agave syrup to sweeten our cocktail, which means less calories, more natural flavor and true tequila heritage.
The Altos Margarita

The Altos Margarita

Ingredients:

  • Altos Plata Tequila 2 parts
  • Fresh Lime Juice 1 part
  • Agave Syrup 1/2 part
  • Lime wedge for garnish 1

Directions:

Build up all the ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake, and strain into an ice-filled tin cup. Garnish with a lime slice on top.

That should do it! Try different sugars, the freshest limes you have around and the best tequila for margarita… ehem… Altos Tequila.
